Catholics around the world are taking part in a nine-day novena praying for the protection of human life and an end to what organisers describe as the “culture of death”.
The Worldwide Novena to Fight the Culture of Death began on September 20 and continues until September 28, the eve of the feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.
Bishop Emeritus of Derry Donal McKeown has encouraged Catholics to join the initiative, saying society needs a “rediscovery of the love of life” amid abortion, suicide, self-harm and assisted dying. “This is a time of crisis for our societies,” he said, urging families, parishes and prayer groups to take part.
Bishop Athanasius Schneider has also backed the campaign, calling on Catholics to pray under the protection of Our Lady, the saints and the angels.
Fr Antonio Diez de Medina CFR in Derry urged participants to “pick up the weapon of the Rosary”, alongside adoration and fasting, particularly for unborn children and those struggling to value their own lives.
