A Collection of Songs About Love,
Composed and performed by Cormac Buckley and others
(Living Water Worship, price unstated)
This disc contains some thirteen songs composed and performed by Cormac Buckley, who gets by with a little help from his friends.
It is an Irish example of a kind of music found in North America and Europe, but less so in these islands. For the love that Cormac Buckley sings of is not the love of Tin Pan Alley (so to speak), but the love of which the gospels and the saints and some others of that kind speak about, a love which is divinely inspired.
That is they raise their voice to God as an expression of a deeper feeling than is often the case with commercial music, and yet they manage to be deeply moving. Perhaps here to echoes of some popular singers are to be found, as Leonard Cohen whom Fr O’Brien calls upon. This is worth trying out. But you won’t know what it is like until you hear it.
The only way that a disc achieves success is through airtime on radio – let us hope that this little disc will land on the right desks somewhere.
