During the US President’s courtesy call to Áras an Uachtaráin on Saturday, September 12, President Connolly presented President Trump with three gifts: a St Brigid’s Cross, a copy of the book Navigato Sancti Brendani – The Voyage of St Brendan and a collection of Michael Longley poems, including his sonnet ‘Ceasefire’.

The gifts reflected the message of peace that President Connolly conveyed to Trump. In a statement after the meeting, she said she “emphasised the unique insight which Irish people can bring to the resolution of conflict” given the country’s own road to peace.

“I assured President Trump that the Irish people would strongly support all those who have the strength to build a shared peace in all those parts of the world currently suffering from such horrific war and violence”.

The gifts also reflected Ireland’s deep religious and medieval history, with the St Brigid’s Cross honouring the patron saint, who is associated with peace and protection. Additionally, the poem ‘Ceasefire’ by Belfast poet Michael Longley, touches on themes of forgiveness and reconciliation, while Navigatio Sancti Brendani weaves a story of faith and adventure through its retelling of a 6th century monk’s journey through the Atlantic.
