Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD has warned that Labour’s proposed gender identity legislation would “damage the health and well-being of children”, arguing that public policy must be grounded in science rather than ideology.
Deputy Tóibín cautioned that debates around gender have “for far too long… been driven by ideology”, to the detriment of young people and women. He criticised recent changes in public-sector language and education guidance, describing them as part of “a significant campaign of social engineering”.
Citing concerns raised by clinicians involved in transgender healthcare, including Prof. Donal O’Shea and Dr Paul Moran, Deputy Tóibín highlighted international shifts away from the “gender-affirming care model” for minors. Arguing that Ireland should pause further legislative change until an ongoing judicial review concerning HSE practices is concluded.
Warning of wider implications for women’s sport, prisons and healthcare, he said the Dáil risks becoming an “echo chamber” if scientific evidence is set aside.
“What does it say when every other party will swap science and health care for gender ideology?” he asked.
