The Society of St Vincent De Paul (SVP) has been praised after 12 new social housing units were opened last week at An T’Ard Clon Road, Ennis, at a cost of €3.65 million.
With the support of Clare County Council, St Benedict’s Conference of the SVP was able to deliver several two-bedroom homes specifically designed for older people and/or those with disabilities. Four of the units are wheelchair accessible.
“At a time when the country is impacted by a housing crisis of mammoth proportions, it is highly appropriate that St Vincent de Paul should be in a position to contribute to the resolution of that crisis in such a meaningful way,” said Tom Tiernan, St Benedicts Conference President, and thanked the team of workers who helped make it possible.
The units were built to “the highest and most sustainable standards,” with a level A energy rating, mechanical ventilation and water systems, and a convenient location for the residents to reach any services or supports within walking distance.
The opening ceremony consisted of speeches from several members and the blessing of the An tÁrd scheme, attended by Ennis parish priest, Fr Tom Ryan.
Denis Carty, SVP Clare Area President said, “The lack of suitable and affordable accommodation is one of the root causes for people experiencing poverty… This project offers people hope. Having a home is fundamental to a person’s physical, psychological and social wellbeing. We need to see more projects like this to address the deep housing needs in our communities.”
