Prospect of AI-generated pornography is “predatory”– Senator Mullen

Senator Rónán Mullen has condemned the “predatory” practices of AI companies, following the announcement last week that ChatGPT will soon allow users to create artificially generated pornography.

OpenAI boss Sam Altman posted on X last week that the company had initially made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues”.

“We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.”

“In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

However, the move has been condemned by Senator Rónán Mullen, citing concerns over the possibility of children and vulnerable people accessing such content.

Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Senator Mullen said, “A development like this shows just how predatory the online market can become”

“It appears that when it comes to the financial bottom line, there is no concern at all for vulnerable people”

“Legislators and regulators need to know who and what they’re dealing with as we move to ensure strict age verification to prevent underage person from getting access to pornography online.”

“We must ensure that there is no loophole that the AI sector could take advantage of”.
