In a Facebook post viewed by thousands and posted on August 22, The Irish Catholic readers gave their opinion on the presidential speculation around Maria Steen.
Prompted to comment their thoughts on whether Ms Steen should be the next President, many praised her calm and collected demeanor. Sinead Tracy described Ms Steen as “A very balanced, intelligent and dignified lady, who speaks with integrity and objective impartiality.” Others had similar thoughts, describing her as “dignified”, “poised” and “articulate”.
Some commenters acknowledged Ms Steen’s political prowess, but doubted whether President is a role she wants. Deirdre Nic Eanruig commented, “She would be perfect but with five little ones there is where her focus should be.” Others echoed the same sentiment, implying that Ms Steen should be focusing on motherhood, and that they “feel sorry” she has been pressured into potentially campaigning”.
Nigel McCollum was of the opinion that Ms Steen may not be the best representation of Ireland’s current political and social landscape. He wrote, “A conservative like Maria is just not the voice I see as representing Ireland…the conservative Catholic years of the past are riddled with wickedness and trauma.” Thomas O’Mahony echoed the same sentiment, writing that Ms Steen as President would be “a step back into another time.”
