The Lumen Dominican Centre nestled on the Sion Hill Campus in the heart of Blackrock, Co. Dublin is a hive of educational activity for adults of all ages. Lumen advocates for lifelong learning and human flourishing in a spirit of community through the ethos of the Dominican sisters. It is committed to the dialogue between faith and culture. Classes return next week and run in the daytime (Tuesday to Friday) and one evening a week. Subjects include theology, bible studies, philosophy, ‘lumen on wheels (including pilgrimages to site associated with courses)’, ballet, yoga, languages, and art history. In addition, in the coming Autumn term Lumen is launching a new choir ‘Cantus Lumen’ (Song of Light). No auditions or experience are necessary, and it will be an opportunity for new and old students to enjoy the benefits and fun of choral singing. The choir will meet on a Thursday afternoon in term time at the Lumen centre.

On September 5, 2025 the Lumen Dominican Centre celebrated its ten-year anniversary along with an open day to launch its new Autumn brochure and the start of a new term. Dr Cathriona Russell was the guest speaker and gave a timely talk on care for our common home and how we can all make a difference.

Operations

Established in 2015 as the Lumen Dominican Centre it began operating as an adult education centre in 1976 through the leadership of Kathleen Moran OP who sadly passed away earlier this year. From 2015, Dr Sabine Schratz OP served as director of the newly named Lumen until late in 2024 when Sheila Keegan Groome was appointed to the position. As director Sheila (in association with the board of management) is responsible for implementing the centre’s vision and overseeing its general operation and development. Sheila is a strong advocate for community and connection and the hospitality provided by the break during classes is an important part of the Lumen experience.

As Lumen looks to a new decade and in recognition of the ten-year anniversary of Laudato Si’, Sheila and her team wish to connect the important message of Laudato Si’ with a greater awareness of how small steps can personally make a big impact over time. To this end Lumen is implementing a reduction in avoidable waste on site and encouraging the use of public transport, cycling or walking for students who live locally. In addition, on Tuesday, September 23 all staff, tutors and students of the Lumen Dominican Centre will be encouraged to leave the car at home for the day as a timely reminder of how we can be part of the solution in small ways.

Lumen is a place of community, connection and education in the heart of South County Dublin where all are welcome including those of all faiths or none. The atmosphere is open and welcoming and a real treasure in these challenging times around the world. You can go to the website at lumenop.ie or if you prefer you can call the centre directly at 01-2882075. It is well worth a visit.
