The annual National Vocations Directors Conference took place on September 9-10 at the Knock House Hotel, bringing together directors from every Irish diocese for two days of prayer, reflection, and collaboration.
This year’s gathering carried a strong international dimension. Keynote speakers included Archbishop Christopher J. Coyne of Hartford, Connecticut; Fr Anthony Federico, Vocations Director for Hartford; and Mr Alex Soucy, Executive Director of Crossroads 4 Christ. They offered encouragement and practical insights on sustaining vocations ministry, stressing the need to support both discerners and the directors who accompany them.
Irish leadership was also to the fore. Bishop Phonsie Cullinan, Chair of the Council for Vocations, joined Fr Willie Purcell, National Vocations Coordinator for Diocesan Priesthood; Ms Carol King of the National Vocations Office; and Mr Gerald Harbison of the Knights of St Columbanus. Their presence underscored the collaborative nature of vocations work and the importance of national support for local directors.
Fr Willie Purcell told participants: “Supporting vocations directors is about ensuring they have the resources, formation, and encouragement they need to walk alongside those discerning God’s call. This gathering is a powerful reminder that we are not alone in this work – we have the prayers and support of many people in our dioceses and parishes.”
Workshops and conversations throughout the event highlighted accompaniment – not only for those discerning priesthood but also for those guiding them. Directors exchanged experiences, offered mutual encouragement, and explored new approaches to nurturing vocations.
The conference closed with a renewed sense of unity and shared mission. Directors left Knock strengthened by international witness, national collaboration, and a deepened commitment to fostering a culture of vocation across Ireland.
