In a statement published on Saturday, October 25, Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Clonfert Michael Duignan congratulated President-elect Catherine Connolly on her victory.

Describing Ms Connolly as “one of our own” and her win as a “significant day for the people of Galway”, Bishop Duignan reminded the local community of the Christian duty to pray for civic leaders. He offered his prayers to the President-elect as she “takes up the highest civic office in this land,” with the inauguration ceremony taking place on November 11.

The bishop also extended his prayers to President Michael D Higgins and his wife, referencing their “very deep and long-established” connection to Galway.

Finishing his encouraging message to Ms Connolly, Bishop Duignan wrote “I recommend her to the prayers of the whole local Catholic community at this time.”
