DJ Carey’s ‘miracle cure’ claim exploited Kilkenny faith-healing ministry

On Morning Ireland, RTÉ’s Paul Murphy discussed the Prime Time investigation into DJ Carey’s elaborate fraud, which involved forged medical reports and a false cancer diagnosis used to solicit money from friends and acquaintances.

At the centre of the deception was a visit to a Kilkenny faith-healing ministry. In 2019, Mr Carey attended a deliverance and healing ministry run by Seamus Byrne, seeking prayer for what he said was multiple myeloma.

Mr Byrne, whose long running ministry offers prayer and spiritual support for the sick, met him privately and prayed with him. Soon after Mr Carey told his friends he had been “miraculously healed”, citing Mr Byrne’s prayers as integral and even offering to buy him a car in thanks, paying a €1,000 deposit.

Mr Carey has since been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for fraud.
