The Diocese of Galway has announced that the remains of the late Bishop Eamonn Casey would no longer rest in the crypt of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas and will be laid in an undisclosed location.
In a press release, the Diocese said they recognised the deep and varied emotion surrounding his burial, previously calling for time and space to reflect on the situation. Over the recent months, they said they had come to an understanding that a cathedral be a “place of unity rather than division, healing rather than hurt, and peace rather than disquiet.”
With the cooperation of Bishop Casey’s family, following prayers for the dead, his remains were moved to a new private resting place.
In their statement, the Diocese expressed gratitude for community’s understanding and patience and has declined further comment.
