Thousands of graduates who voted in previous Seanad elections have been removed from the voting register, and most people affected are unaware, said Independent Senator Rónán Mullen.
Senator Mullen is calling on all Irish graduates to re-claim their right to vote on the www.seanadvoter.ie website, or by writing to SeanadVoter.ie at P.O. BOX 13784, Dublin 2.
A new six-seat constituency, ‘Higher Education’, replaces the NUI and TCD panels from the next Seanad election. All graduates, including those previously registered, were required to opt-in to the new system and many missed out, Senator Mullen said.
“The good side of the new system is that degree holders from previously excluded colleges like All Hallows, Mary Immaculate College, Mater Dei etc may now be able to register and vote for the Seanad,” said Senator Mullen. “The downside is that most previously eligible voters have come off the register and most don’t know it.”
Senator Mullen is asking all graduates to log on to www.seanadvoter.ie to secure their Seanad vote. Evidence of a current passport is required. Those without an up-to-date passport should email applications@seanadvoter.ie or write to Seanadvoter.ie, P.O. Box 13784, Dublin 2.
