Inter Church Meeting: Nicene theology ‘pathway to unity’

16 denominations from the Irish Council of Churches were represented at the 35th Irish Inter Church Meeting in Co. Down on November 13 and 14.

Archbishop Eamon Martin and Bishop of Limerick Brendan Leahy, who serves as co-chair of the Irish Council of Churches, were both present and there to reflect on this year’s theme: the Nicene creed and its importance for living faith today.

Rev. Dr Liam Fraser spoke as a representative of the Church of Scotland, drawing an important distinction between the Nicene creed, which will be incorporated into a new book of confessions based on the Church’s General Assembly decision, and Nicene theology, which he described as more universal and a potential “pathway to unity”.

Other talks, including one from Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London Archbishop Angaelos, reiterated Dr Fraser’s key argument: while there are differences in how each denomination recites or sings the creed, the Nicene theology that runs through it remains the same and draws everyone closer to Christ.
