Appeals continue for safe release of Irish missionary Gena Heraty

Irish humanitarian Gena Heraty remains in captivity after being abducted from the NPFS compound in Kenscoff, Haiti, along with seven others, including a child. A native of Co. Mayo, Ms Heraty has worked in Haiti for over 30 years, leading a special needs programme for vulnerable children.

During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Leo XIV made a heartfelt appeal for the immediate release of all hostages in Haiti, including Ms Heraty. He condemned the country’s “violence of all kinds, human trafficking, forced displacement, and kidnappings,” and urged the international community to offer concrete support so Haitians may “live in peace”.

In her home community near Westport, hundreds gathered for a Mass in Cushlough Church to pray for her safe return.
